DERMATOPATHOLOGY

While Dr Spengane is able to recognise most skin diseases with the naked eye, some skin conditions require a biopsy to get a diagnosis. This is done by means of a removing a small sample of skin in the affected area and sending the sample to a laboratory for histopathological analysis. The skin sample is then viewed under a microscope. The results of the biopsy are then sent to the dermatologist for clinical and histopathological correlation.

WHY WOULD DERMATOPATHOLOGY BE NECESSARY?

Since there are more than 1,500 disorders of the skin, in some cases where the diagnosis isn't clear, dermatopathology is considered as the more comprehensive method of getting a diagnosis. It includes histology, immunofluorescence, immunohistochemistry and electron microscopy. This proves highly useful for skin cancers, auto-immune diseases, infections and suspicious skin lesions.

As your dermatologist, at times Dr Spengane may need to combine medical history, examination and histology to ascertain a diagnosis.
