CRYOTHERAPY

Cryotherapy, or cryoablation, is a minimally invasive procedure done by your skin specialist to freeze and destroy abnormal tissue using liquid nitrogen.

Cryotherapy is used to remove unwanted skin lesions such as:

  • list imageSeborrheic keratoses
  • list imageActinic keratoses
  • list imageKeloids
  • list imageSkin tags
  • list imagePyogenic granuloma
  • list imageMyxoid cyst
  • list imageCholesterol spots

WHAT DOES THE PROCEDURE INVOLVE?

Using a cryospray, liquid nitrogen with a temperature of -196 degrees Celsius, is applied to the skin lesion for a few seconds. How long the liquid nitrogen is applied for will depend on the diameter and depth of freeze required. In some cases, cryotherapy is done twice once the lesion has "thawed". This is called "double freeze-thaw". Cryotherapy is a safe and quick procedure that freezes the lesion, causing it to form a crust that will fall off within the next two weeks.
